1. Terminology
Literal meaning IPTV=Internet Protocol TV / Interactive Personal TV DVB is broadcasting technology, DVB=digital video broadcast, IPTV is streaming media technology, DVB network is HFC, and IPTV network is IP net. DVB can realize broadcasting, live broadcasting, NVOD, PPV, IPPV, data broadcasting and other services, but it is difficult to realize TVOD; IPTV is able to achieve live broadcasting, recorded broadcasting, VOD (TVOD), data broadcasting, games and other services. To a certain extent, there is a competitive relationship between the DVB and IPTV, but actually they have complementary characteristics.
- Transmission: IPTV uses the IP metropolitan area network, and OTT uses the Internet.
- Content: IPTV is mainly the content of licensee; OTT except licensee content + video network content (with copyright) + others.
- Screen: IPTV is only for TV screens; OTT has Pad and Phone screens (the so-called multi-screen interaction).
IPTV is controlled by telecom operators. It is an interactive network TV, using a computer or Set Top Box+ TV to complete the functions of receiving VOD programs, video broadcasting, and Internet surfing. It integrates broadband networks, Internet, multimedia, and communications technologies to provide users with a variety of new technologies including digital TV interactive services. It adopts high-efficiency video compression technology, so that the video streaming bandwidth can have a viewing effect close to DVD when the transmission bandwidth is 800KB/s.
